Do I Have Diabetes | Signs Of Diabetes | Diabetes Symptoms In Men & Women | Early Signs Of Diabetes | Early Warning Signs Of Diabetes

Hey guys! This weeks video is about the signs of diabetes. Having some of the signs of diabetes doesn’t mean you definitely have the condition, but you should always contact your GP, just to make sure.

Type 2 diabetes can cause serious long-term health problems. It can be easy to miss as it develops slowly, especially in the early stages when it can be harder to spot the symptoms. If left untreated diabetes affects many major organs, including your heart, blood vessels, nerves, eyes and kidneys. Being diagnosed early and controlling your blood sugar levels can help prevent these complications.

COMMON SYMPTOMS OF DIABETES:
• Urinating more often than usual, particularly at night
• Feeling very thirsty
• Feeling very tired
• Unexplained weight loss
• Itching around the penis or vagina, or frequent episodes of thrush
• Cuts or wounds that heal slowly
• Blurred vision – caused by the lens of the eye becoming dry

WHY DO WE GET THESE SYMPTOMS IN DIABETES:
These symptoms occur because some or all of the glucose stays in the blood, and isn’t being used as fuel for energy. The body tries to reduce blood glucose levels by flushing the excess glucose out of the body in the urine. High levels of glucose being passed in the urine are a perfect breeding ground for the fungal infection which causes thrush.

RISK FACTORS FOR TYPE 2 DIABETES:
Three of the main risk factors for developing type 2 diabetes are:

Age – Being over the age of 40 (over 25 for people of south Asian, Chinese, African-Caribbean or black African origin, even if you were born in the UK).

Genetics – Having a close relative with the condition, such as a parent, brother or sister.

Weight – Being overweight or obese.

More information at: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/type-2-diabetes/causes/

SYMPTOMS OF FUNGAL THRUSH INFECTIONS:
Thrush is a yeast infection (candida albicans) which tends to affect warm, moist areas of the body such as the vagina, penis, mouth and certain areas of skin.

Thrush is more common in people with diabetes as high sugar levels lead to better conditions for the yeast to grow.

Vaginal thrush (vulvovaginal candidiasis) symptoms include:

• Soreness and irritation
• White curd appearance on the skin
• Pain during sexual intercourse
• White vaginal discharge
• Reddening of the vulva (the outer parts of the vagina)
• Itching around the vagina (infectious vaginitis)

Oral thrush (oral candidiasis) symptoms include:
• A nasty or bitter taste
• Redness or bleeding inside the mouth
• Creamy white coloured patches (lesions) in the mouth (cheeks, lips, tongue or the back of the mouth)
• Painful and sore mouth (can include the throat)
• Cracks at the corners of the lips (angular cheilitis)

Thrush in men (candida balanitis) Symptoms of thrush in men include:
• Reddening or swelling or soreness of the glans (head) of the penis
• Itching around the tip of the penis
• Discharge beneath the foreskin
• Nasty odour
• Pain during urination
• White curd-like appearance on the skin
• Painful experience during sex

PREVENTING TYPE 2 DIABETES:
If you’re at risk of type 2 diabetes, you may be able to prevent it developing by making lifestyle changes:

• Eating a healthy, balanced diet
• Losing weight if you’re overweight, and maintaining a healthy weight
• Stopping smoking if you smoke
• Drinking alcohol in moderation
• Taking plenty of regular exercise

Lee Health is a nationally recognized, award-winning health system in Southwest Florida. We are caring people, inspiring health.

The numbers are surely attention getting: nearly 7 million Americans have undiagnosed diabetes. What gets less notice are the early warning signs.

“If they’re not going to their doctor, if they’re not seeing their physician they’re not having those lab works, they’re not reporting their signs they could just be going along with their normal daily activities,” says Melanie Aracri, a certified diabetes educator for Lee Health.

All too often patients show up at a hospital in a health crisis and find out they have highly elevated blood sugar. New studies find 1 in 10 heart attack patients may have undetected diabetes. We’ve broken down 5 warnings signs that should get your attention.

“The three classic signs of high blood sugar, we call them the three “P”s: polyphagia, polydipsia, and polyuria. Those are increased thirst, increased hunger, and increased urination,” says Aracri.

It’s easy to minimize increased thirst, especially when it’s hot. And frequent urination seems to naturally follow. But experts say it could be our body’s way of flushing extra glucose.

“The kidney has to work really hard to get that blood sugar out, that blood glucose out when it’s high,” says Aracri.

Wounds that don’t heal could be another warning sign.

“The body’s not able to fight that infection because of that extra glucose in the system,” says Aracri.

Frequent yeast or urinary tract infections may also be a red flag many people fail to consider. The earlier diabetes is picked up, the easier it is to avoid complications.

“it’s a learning how to adapt your eating pattern, your meal plan to your lifelong activities and daily habits,” says Aracri.

Dr. Sarah Hallberg – Type 2 Diabetes Reversal

Filmed at the Emerging Science of Carbohydrate Restriction and Nutritional Ketosis, Scientific Sessions at The Ohio State University

Learn more at https://blog.virtahealth.com/category/science-research/

An impressive body of scientific evidence over the last 15 years documents long term benefits of carbohydrate-restricted, especially ketogenic, diets. We now understand molecular mechanisms and why they work. Popular books and articles now challenge the advice ‘carbohydrates are good and fats are bad.’ Circa mid-19th century urinary ketones were identified in diabetics sealing their toxic label for the next 150 years. Despite work four decades ago showing ketones were highly functional metabolites, they are still misidentified as toxic byproducts of fat metabolism. The vilification of fat by regulatory and popular dogma perpetuates this myth. But the nutrition-metabolic landscape is improving dramatically.

A growing number of researchers have contributed to what is now a critical mass of science that provides compelling clinical evidence that ketogenic diets uniquely benefit weight loss, pre-diabetes, and type-2 diabetes. In the last five years, basic scientists have discovered that b-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), the primary circulating ketone, is a potent signaling molecule that decreases inflammation and oxidative stress. BHB has been suggested to be a longevity metabolite, with strong support from recently published mouse studies showing decreased midlife mortality and extended longevity and healthspan. Although type-2 diabetes is often described as a chronic progressive disease, emerging evidence indicates that sustained nutritional ketosis can reverses the disease. There is growing interest in studying potential therapeutic effects of ketosis on cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. There are even reasons certain athletes may benefit from nutritional ketosis and ketone supplements ─ debunking the long-standing dogma that high carbohydrate intake is required to perform optimally.

With the support of the well-established Ohio State Food Innovation Center, this conference will bring together the top experts in these fields to share what has been achieved and what remains to be done to advance this exciting field of scientific discovery.
